AfD to push for Germany's EU exit if no reforms made

Germany's far right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party announced on Sunday that it will campaign for Germany's exit from the European Union if its reform demands are not met, according to various media reports.

The party, which will run for European Parliament elections in May, voted for the demand to be included in its election manifesto at a party congress in Riesa in Saxony state. The changes that the AfD is seeking include the dissolution of the European Parliament and the euro as well as an end to Europe's "Islamization". However, the party did state that Germany's departure from the EU, or "Dexit" as it has been termed, would only be a last resort if "deep reforms" are not made.

The AfD's decision is the first time in Germany's post-war history that a political party has suggested that the country leave the EU. It also came two days before a crunch vote in the United Kingdom on its Brexit deal with the EU.
