Bayer: Glyphosate safe and non-carcinogenic

German pharmaceutical giant Bayer said on Saturday its weedkiller glyphosate is "safe and non-carcinogenic" after its subsidiary Monsanto was ordered to pay $289.2 million in damages in a California trial that found the company guilty of failing to warn of the consequences and dangers of using the product.

The lawsuit was filed by a school groundskeeper who claimed Monsanto's glyphosate-based herbicides Roundup and Ranger Pro caused him terminal lymphoma, while Monsanto faces similar allegations in several thousand lawsuits across the United States.

"On the basis of scientific evidence, global regulatory assessments and decades of practical experience using glyphosate, Bayer believes that glyphosate is safe and non-carcinogenic," the company told AFP in a statement. Monsanto announced it will appeal the court decision.
