Belgium to ban Huawei equipment in state institutions

Belgium's Center for Cybersecurity is considering imposing a ban on telecommunications equipment produced by Chinese company Huawei in its state institutions due to the security concerns stemming from espionage allegations against the company, Belga News Agency reported on Friday. Belgium's decision follows the earlier New Zealand's ban on Huawei equipment after Washington warned its allies of the alleged security risks posed by the Chinese company.

"We have recently commissioned objective research via national and international channels showing that the use of Huawei technologies pose risk," Cybersecurity Center director Miguel de Bruycker stated.

Meanwhile, Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada and faces charges of violations of United States sanctions against Iran. Chinese Foreign Ministry demanded an explanation from Canada as well as for the executive to be immediately released.
