Bonn, Cologne to ban older diesel cars from 2019

Bonn and Cologne became the latest German cities to ban older diesel cars from some of its roads on Thursday.

Following complaints from Environmental Action Germany (DUH), a non-profit organization, the Cologne administrative court ordered the city to ban diesel vehicles from its city center in an effort to reduce the levels of nitrogen dioxide emissions. The decision, which also bans older diesel models from two streets in the city of Bonn, will be enforced from April next year.

Earlier this year, Germany's capital Berlin passed a partial ban on diesel vehicles in its city center, which must be implemented by the city authorities by 2020. Hamburg already introduced similar prohibitions which were ruled admissible by the country's Federal Administrative Court, while Frankfurt will implement a ban on diesel cars in the city center starting next year.
