Boris Johnson calls for UK aid department's closure

Former United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson called for the UK Department for International Development's (Dfid) closure and rolling back into the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in an interview with the Financial Times on Friday.

Johnson told the newspaper that a "unified Whitehall voice" was needed to have an efficient and effective post-Brexit foreign policy and that Dfid's closure was necessary for 'Global Britain' to achieve its "full and massive potential." He also said that the UK government's promise of spending 0.7% annually on foreign aid was wasting large sums of taxpayer money and that global development could be boosted in a way that "coheres much better with UK political and indeed commercial objectives."
