ECB explores OMT bond program for Italy – report

The European Central Bank is studying the option to introduce OMT, or Outright Monetary Transactions, in case the crisis centered on the dispute about Italy's budget gets out of hand, MNI reported on Tuesday, without revealing sources. Peter Praet from the Executive Board of the European Central Bank earlier said the program must be demanded by the government in Rome if it needs assistance and that the conditions are clear.

The scheme, devised in 2012, has never been implemented.

The euro was 0.2% down at 11:53 am CET, selling for $1.13116. It strengthened 0.26% to £0.88688. The exchange rate against the Swiss franc slipped 0.07% to 1.13113. The joint currency lost 0.22% to ¥128.496.
