Grassley warns Trump not to declare natl emergency

Senator Chuck Grassley warned United States President Donald Trump not to declare a national emergency in order to get his wall in an interview with CNBC on Friday.

The veteran Republican stated that if Trump did so, the judicial system would get involved "almost immediately" and that they would subsequently make a decision. Grassley remarked that the sooner the Supreme Court of the United States could make a decision on the issue the better it would be. "The president is threatening emergency action, a national emergency declaration. I don't think he should do that. I think it's a bad precedent. And it contravenes the power of the purse that comes from the elected representatives of the people," Grassley said.

Trump recently announced that although he had the absolute power to declare a national emergency, he would not be doing so anytime soon. However, his subsequent walkout of a meeting with Democrat Congressional leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi over the issue of funding for the wall and reports that the White House was readying legal justifications for the declaration of a national emergency have left the matter open to question.
