Hammond: Delusion to think UK can get better Brexit deal

United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond told the Parliament on Thursday that Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit withdrawal agreement is the best deal Britain can get and added that it is a "delusion" to believe the European Union will accept renegotiation.

Hammond stressed that he always believed the UK's departure from the EU will inevitably have an "economic cost" but noted lawmakers should approve May's deal since ignoring the will of the British people and remaining a part of the bloc would have worse consequences. The chancellor reiterated his stance that, in case a final deal is not reached before 2020, he would favor extending the transition period to implementing the Irish backstop provision of the divorce deal.

Earlier today, May called on the House of Commons to back her deal, reminding lawmakers that it is their "duty to deliver" on the wishes of British people who chose to leave the bloc. Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan urged May to revoke triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and cancel Brexit in case her deal is rejected by Parliament.
