Kremlin welcomes US, North Korea dialogue

Russia welcomes the start of direct dialogue between the United States and North Korea, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.

"Such meetings, whatever the results, contribute to the reduction of tension on the Korean Peninsula and move the situation away from the critical point where it was several months ago," he explained. However, Peskov added Moscow considers the solution to the crisis on the Korean Peninsula cannot be solved overnight.

United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made history on Tuesday in Singapore in the first-ever meeting between a sitting US president and a head of the isolated state. The encounter resulted in the signing of a document which reaffirms Pyongyang's commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and working toward "lasting and stable" peace in the region in exchange for security guarantees from Washington.
