London mayor urges May to revoke Article 50 if Brexit deal fails

The Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan urged on Thursday British Prime Minister Theresa May to withdraw Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and cancel the country's departure from the European Union if she fails to pass her Brexit deal through the Parliament. According to excerpts of a speech he is set to deliver in Dublin, Khan warned that the worst possible outcome of the Brexit negotiations would be a scenario in which the country leaves the EU without a deal.

"This would not only be devastating for London’s economy, but would actually hurt businesses and economies across Europe – including here in Dublin –" and increase the chance of a hard border on the island of Ireland," Khan says. The London mayor added that canceling Brexit would be "the single best way to guarantee that we avoid falling off the cliff edge," while also providing "breathing space to decide how we resolve this mess."
