Merkel's party convenes to elect new leader

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is having its Annual Congress in Hamburg on Friday where over 1,000 party delegates are set to vote on the new party leader. The current president is Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel, who announced she will not be running for reelection in the party, nor in the national election.

Merkel will stay Chancellor until the end of her term in 2021, after 16 years. She has been the leader of the conservative CDU since 2000.

The frontrunners to succeed Merkel as head of CDU are party's General Secretary Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and former leader of the party's parliamentary group Friedrich Merz. The health minister in the federal government, Jens Spahn, is also in the race.
