Monsanto to appeal $289M fine

Monsanto announced it plans to appeal the ruling of a California court which ordered the company to pay $289 million in compensatory and punitive damages to school groundskeeper DeWayne Johnson who filed a lawsuit claiming Monsanto's weed-killers caused his terminal cancer.

"Today’s decision does not change the fact that more than 800 scientific studies and the fact that glyphosate does not cause cancer, and did not cause Mr. Johnson’s cancer," Monsanto noted. The agrochemical and agricultural firm insisted that scientific studies proved that its herbicides are safe for human use.

Earlier, a jury at the Superior Court of California in San Francisco ruled that Monsanto failed to warn consumers of the risks of using its glyphosate-based herbicides Roundup and Ranger Pro.
