Lion Air passenger flight crashes near Jakarta - report

According to reports, a Lion Air jet from Jakarta to Pangkalpinang has crashed after it lost contact with the air traffic control, several minutes after takeoff. It is currently unknown what caused the Boeing 737 to crash, nor it is clear how many passengers and crew were on board the plane, although it is capable of seating up to 200 passengers.

"It has been confirmed that it has crashed," Yusuf Latif, a spokesman for Indonesia's search and rescue agency said. The company noted it will hold a press conference on the incident later in the day.
