Merkel confirms departure after end of term

German Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed on Monday that she will not run for reelection as the country's leader after her term expires in 2021. Merkel also said she would step down as the leader of her party, Christian Democratic Union (CDU), confirming earlier media reports about her departure from both positions.

The news comes after the elections in the German state of Hesse yesterday where both CDU and its coalition partner, Social Democratic Party (SPD), saw a significant decrease in support. CDU won 27% of the votes, while SPD won 20%. On the other hand, the far-right political party AfD won 13% of the votes in the German province, to now be represented in all regional parliaments.
