Ghosn denies 'meritless' charges

Former Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. chairman Carlos Ghosn denied the charges brought against him before the Tokyo District Court, calling them "meritless and unsubstantiated."

"Contrary to the accusations made by the prosecutors, I never received any compensation from Nissan that was not disclosed, nor did I ever enter into any binding contract with Nissan to be paid a fixed amount that was not disclosed," Ghosn said, claiming he acted "honorably, legally, and with the knowledge and approval of the appropriate executives inside the company to help strengthen a Japanese carmaker."

Ghosn was previously removed from the position of the chairman of Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Nissan.
