Pompeo vows to drive Iran out of Syria, tougher sanctions

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reaffirmed on Thursday that Washington seeks to end Iran's presence in Syria. "There will be no US reconstruction assistance for areas of Syria held by Assad until Iran and its proxy forces withdraw, and until we see irreversible progress toward a political solution," he said in Cairo.

Pompeo took the opportunity to reiterate US sanctions on Tehran would continue and keep getting tougher. "Economic sanctions against the regime are among the strongest in history, and will keep getting tougher until the Iranian regime changes its policies that threaten the United States and the international community," he emphasized.
