Pelosi unsure lawmakers will pass USMCA without changes

United States House of Representatives Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi stated that although the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) free trade agreement is generally a good deal, it does not set any regulations on labor and environmental issues, casting doubt that the Congress will pass the deal without any changes, Politico reported on Thursday.

"While there are positive things in this proposed trade agreement, it is just a list without real enforcement of the labor and environmental protections," Pelosi said. Earlier, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin stated that the agreement must be passed as it is written, adding that changes for "political reasons" would not be acceptable.

The presidents of the US, Mexico, and Canada formally signed the USMCA last Friday at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires.
