Putin sees Trump-Kim meeting as step towards peaceful settlement

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he believes the meeting between United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un marked the first step towards a "full-scale" peaceful settlement of the Korean Peninsula crisis. The Russian president added that he plans to meet with Kim later this year. Kim may visit Russia in September to attend the Far East Economic Forum in Vladivostok, but Putin noted the two leaders could meet at a separately organized summit.

According to Interfax, Putin stated the US-North Korea summit "pushed away the possibility of a large military conflict." His comments echo South Korean President Moon Jae-in's remarks that Trump's meeting with Kim saved the world from "threats of nuclear war and long-range missiles."

Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated Trump's meeting with Kim created a "path forward" which can result in peace on the Korean Peninsula, but warned there are "still risks" that North Korea will not denuclearize despite promising to do so.
