Russia summons Austrian envoy over alleged spy arrest

Russia's Foreign Ministry summoned the Austrian ambassador to Moscow Johannes Eigner in relation to Vienna's arrest of a retired colonel who allegedly spied for Russia, a ministry source told TASS on Friday. According to the source, Eigner is expected to visit the Russian Foreign Ministry later in the day.

Meanwhile, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed Austria should have contacted Moscow directly to voice its suspicions before making the espionage allegations public and insisted Russia does not know anything about the retired officer suspected of spying.

Earlier, Austria's Defense Ministry stated that a 70-year-old former military officer was arrested on Thursday over his alleged transfer of classified information about the migration crisis, the Austrian military aircraft and artillery systems to Russian military intelligence services since the late 1990s. Austria's Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl summoned Russian diplomats from the Vienna embassy to discuss the incident and canceled her trip to Russia which had been scheduled for December.
