South Korea to buy Israeli air defense systems

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration in Seoul revealed on Tuesday it allocated 330 billion won, or $292 million, for another two air defense systems supplied by ELTA Systems Ltd. Green Pine Block C radars are ordered from the manufacturer controlled by Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. to be put into use early into next decade, focusing on detection of ballistic missiles from afar, it said.

The improved version has a range wider than 800 kilometers, compared to 600 for the Block B, already in South Korea's arsenal. In the update, the procurer also acknowledged it is on track to buy Boeing Co.'s P-8 Poseidon patrol airplanes. It comes during a period of rapprochement with North Korea.
