Strong aftershock hits New Caledonia, tsunami warning issued

A strong aftershock with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale hit New Caledonia after a 7.6 undersea earthquake occurred off the coast of the Loyalty Islands located in South Pacific. Since the earthquake appeared at a shallow depth, a tsunami warning has been put in place up to 1,000 km away.

Both New Caledonia and Vanuatu have been issued warnings of "hazardous tsunami waves" that could reach from 1 to 3 meters above the tide. Citizens in the area were ordered an immediate evacuation.

Stronger waves could be expected off the coasts of the US territories of Guam and Hawaii, Australia and Japan.
