Suspicious packages sent to Melbourne consulates

A number of consulates in Melbourne, Australia have received suspicious packages, local media reported. At least ten consulates are reportedly on lockdown due to the incident, including the United States, British, Indian, Swiss, German, Korean, Greek, Italian, Pakistani and Egyptian.

The local media outlets reported a "major operation" is underway in an attempt to contain the situation. Emergency services received the first alerts about the packages around 2 pm local time. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade stated the service is "assisting the Australian Federal Police right now with a number of incidents across Melbourne." Paramedics in hazmat suits have been seen at several consulates, but there has been no official confirmation as to the contents of the packages.
