Taliban attack city of Ghazni, leave at least 20 dead

Taliban insurgents stormed the city of Ghazni early morning on Friday leaving dozens of casualties in the provincial capital, media reported. The militants claimed after the attack that now they hold most of the city under control. On the other hand, the government forces denied the claim, calling it "Taliban propaganda."

“Fighting is ongoing but the whole city has not been taken by the Taliban,” Ghazni governor's spokesman Mohammad Arif Noori stated, adding that the government will not let the insurgents take control. United States military said that it sent helicopters to support the government forces in Ghazni and that it carried out a drone strike against the Taliban.

The attack marks a second storming of the city this year, a particularly strategically important point for the Taliban. The city is located between Kabul and Kandahar, two largest cities in Afghanistan.
