Texas Sen. Cruz holds narrow lead over Dem challenger - poll

The Republican United States Senator Ted Cruz maintains his narrow 9-point advantage over Democrat challenger Beto O'Rourke in the upcoming Texas Senate election, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released on Thursday. Cruz, who has held the office since 2013, currently garners the support of 54% of likely voters, while O'Rourke is backed by 45%. According to the poll results, Cruz holds his advantage mostly due to the support of male voters, 62% of whom said they would vote for him, while 37% would opt for O'Rourke. Cruz's lead is unchanged to the advantage he had in the same poll conducted three weeks ago.

"The election is far from over, but Sen. Cruz would have to suffer a major collapse for him to lose," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "That is even more unlikely since 97 percent of Cruz voters say they are sure they won't change their minds."

Considering their narrow 51/100 majority, Republicans can afford to lose only two seats in the upcoming November midterm elections in their effort to keep control of the Senate. Cruz is considered to be one of the most vulnerable GOP incumbents, whose defeat at the hands of O'Rourke would mark a major step for the Democrats in overtaking the upper chamber of the US Congress.
