Tory Commons leader to resign if May caves in on Brexit plan - report

The Tory Leader of the House of Commons, Andrea Leadsom (pictured) is ready to hand in her resignation if UK Prime Minister Theresa May makes further concessions on her Brexit plan, the Independent reported on Friday. Leadsom, one of the leading Brexiteers in May's cabinet, is said to resign in case of any deal that would leave the UK in the EU's customs territory permanently.

The report comes after last night's meeting of senior government ministers in which May reportedly revealed some details on her latest proposal for the Irish border issue that would keep the country in EU's customs union for an unlimited amount of time after the transition period if a trade deal cannot be done in time. A number of senior members of the government, including cabinet ministers Liam Fox, Michael Gove, Dominic Raab and Jeremy Hunt are said to have expressed "concerns" over May's proposal.

Shortly after the report emerged, May's spokesperson Alison Donnelly stressed that the prime minister would never agree to a backstop solution that would trap the UK in a customs union permanently. According to Donnelly, a future economic relationship between the UK and EU needs to be in place by the end of December 2020, at the end of the transition period.
