Turkey asks for 10-year sentence for US pastor, recommends bail

Turkish prosecutor asked for the removal of the travel ban for the American pastor Andrew Brunson, but simultaneously pushed for a 10-year sentence on Friday, AP reported. Meanwhile, Turkish lira jumped slightly on the news of possible release.

Ismail Cem Halavurt, Brunson's lawyer, stated earlier that the lifting of the travel ban would mean his client could leave Turkey. The pastor is reportedly expected to be let go today. According to earlier news, the United States is supposed to start the loosening of economic pressure on Turkey after the release.

The detention of the American pastor was one of the main reasons for the deterioration of relations between Washington and Ankara in the recent period, with the US doubling tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum imports, which led to a currency crisis in the country.
