UK's Hammond plays down Trump's Brexit plan criticism

United Kingdom's Chancellor Philip Hammond (pictured) tried to play down United States President Donald Trump's harsh words on UK Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plan by saying he is "sure" that the two leaders will have a "very positive" conversation during their meetings later today. "I know she’s looking forward to setting out to him [Mr Trump] how this Brexit plan will work, what the detail is, and how that will enable us to engage in a very positive way with the US in the future," Hammond told Sky News on Friday. Hammond also expressed his belief that today's meeting will enable the UK to find a "way forward" with the US as well as with its key partners in the EU.

Regarding Trump's comment about the white paper on Brexit effectively killing the prospect of a future US-UK trade deal, the chancellor said that the president "hasn’t yet had a chance, I think, to discuss with the prime minister the white paper, which was after all only published yesterday."
