US initial jobless claims down by 17,000 to 216,000

Initial jobless claims in the United States for the week ending January 5 decreased by 17,000 to 216,000 compared to the previous week's revised level, the US Department of Labor reported on Thursday. The 4-week moving average amounted to 221,750, up by 2,500 compared to a week ago.

The seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2% for the week ending December 29, unchanged from the previous week. The number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the same week was 1,722,000, a decrease of 28,000 from the previous week's revised level. The 4-week moving average stood at 1,721,250, which is 15,250 more than the previous week's revised average.
