US initial jobless claims up 11,000 to 222,000

Initial jobless claims in the United States for the week ending May 12 stood at 222,000, compared to the previous week's unrevised level of 211,000, the US Department of Labor reported on Thursday. The 4-week moving average was 213,250, which is the lowest level for the moving average figure since December 13 1969.

The seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate for the week ending May 5 was 1.2%, decreasing 0.1 percentage point from the previous week's unrevised level. Insured unemployment during the same week decreased by 87,000 to 1,707,000 from the previous week's revised level. The 4-week moving average was 1,773,750, marking a drop of 39,750 from the previous week's revised average.
