US ready to talk with Russia on Kurds in Syria

United States National Security Adviser John Bolton stated that Washington is ready to talk with Moscow on the Kurdish position in Syria to ensure that "they're not harmed," according to an interview transcript posted by Hugh Hewitt on Friday. The official also added that Russia would prefer that Damascus takes control over the Kurdish territories.

Commenting on the report that Moscow believes that the US withdrawal creates need for Kurds and Damascus to talk, Bolton said: "You know, the Kurds are in a very difficult position, and the President [Trump], as he spoke with [Turkish] President Erdogan, thinks that we, they were loyal to us, and we must make sure that they’re not harmed. That’s what we’re talking to the Turks about. We’d talk to the Russians about it, too, if need be."

Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo repeated the US will ensure Kurds in Syria are safe after American troops pull out from the country. Meanwhile, Erdogan slammed US National Security Advisor John Bolton for stating Turkey must protect the Kurds, asserting that Ankara "will not compromise."
