William Barr to be appointed as new AG - report

United States President Donald Trump is considering nominating former Justice Department chief William Barr as the new US attorney general, Fox News reported on Thursday citing sources close to the matter. According to sources, the president does not personally know Barr but respects Republican lawyer's reputation.

Barr served as attorney general for two years from 1991 under former US President George H.W. Bush. However, it was also reported that Trump's decision is not final and that there are other candidates being considered for the job despite Barr being a top contender.

The attorney general position became vacant after now former Attorney General Jeff Sessions wrote in his resignation letter that he is stepping down at Trump's request. Sessions' Chief of Staff Matthew G. Whitaker took over as the acting attorney general until a permanent replacement is found.
